Kindergarten

In the Kindergarten room at FiRST Early Learning
we support the children to develop:

Sound social skills:

  • Working collaboratively with peers
  • Having confidence to contribute ideas in both formal and informal settings
  • Solving conflict themselves
  • Making friends and showing empathy – caring relationships
  • Managing their emotions
  • Taking turns and sharing
  • Helping others
  • Using manners
  • Following rules
  • Playing safely

Early literacy and mathematical skills:

  • Name recognition
  • Alphabet recognition and letter sounds
  • Counting and number recognition
  • Matching objects
  • Listening to stories and retelling stories
  • Knowing and joining in

Confidence (independence) in self-help routines:

  • Being able to go to the toilet and change clothing be themselves
  • Looking after their clothing, shoes and socks throughout the day
  • Packing up their bag at the end of the day
  • Washing hands
  • Blowing nose

Communication skills:

  • Listening to others
  • Following instructions
  • Asking for help
  • Speaking clearly in grammatically correct sentences
  • Using appropriate word to share ideas and feelings

A good grasp of problem solving skills:

  • Asking questions
  • Developing hypothesis
  • Negotiation
  • Not to be discouraged by failure
  • A willingness to try different approaches

A brief overview of the Yearly Educational Program:

Term 1

Focusing on:

  • Colours
  • Begin to recognise their own name
  • Animals
  • Plants
  • Seasons, Weather
  • Begin to play board games in small groups

Term 3

Focusing on:

  • Numbers
  • Living and Non-living
  • Learning About plants (and planting and taking care of our own)
  • Continents, countries
  • Different languages and traditional games, song from different cultures
  • Developing pre- writing skills

Term 2

Focusing on:

  • Shapes
  • Categorise animals into mammals, birds, reptiles, etc
  • Cooking experiences
  • Begin to trace our own name
  • Experiencing special art techniques ( clay, plaster)
  • Introducing “being the special helper “responsibility to children

Term 4

Focusing on:

  • Letters and sounds
  • Human body and how some body parts function
  • Healthy lifestyle
  • Graduation night preparation

Please note all of the topics above are touched on consistently throughout the year, although these guidelines show when they will be delivered based on children’s skills and developmental stage.
